MEET MINISTER JEFF

Min. Jeffery Bowden began his journey with the Deaf community at a young age when he brought on the campus of Gallaudet University by his father who worked the weekend shift for the Physical Plant. Jeff was exposed to the life and experiences of Deaf college students and subsequently Jeff, also worked at Gallaudet in a variety of positions.  After joining Shiloh Baptist Church (Washington DC) he was introduced to sign language interpreting by observing the interpreters during worship service. After began taking sign language classes he was allowed to interpret for worship services. He credits that as the launching of his career in interpreting and his immersion into the Deaf community.

Serving several years with the National and Local Black Deaf Advocates, Jeff served as a member of the interpreting team for NBDA conferences. Jeff has authored and produced several plays with an emphasis on including Deaf actors, technicians and directors.

Stage production includes: Z: A Christmas Story and Silent Scream and written a third play entitled Ephphatha.

Now retired as a staff interpreter for the US Department of State, Jeff works now as a freelance interpreter. His hobbies include learning to play the standard Bass, caring for his two Labradoodles and writing.

Jeff has a strong passion for elevating and enhancing opportunities for persons throughout the Deaf community.  Jeffery Bowden is also interested in mentoring up and coming interpreters with a special emphasis on Black male interpreters.
